A small percentage of Novians rejected cybernetic technology and chose to live an organic existence. They called themselves "Ascetics," but were commonly referred to as "Dregs" by the rest of Novian society. They congregated in communes at the fringes of the commonwealth, largely scorned and disregarded by the Imperium. These settlements frequently fell victim to orgus pirates, also known as "Choppers," who would plunder colony inhabitants and sell their organic materials on the black market.
Subject Griger 629 grew up in such a commune on the moon Orionis (Tosis 4). When their sister was taken by pirates, they left the colony and abandoned the ascetic life. Subject accepted synthetic implants to extend life long enough to accomplish their goal of eradicating the pirates who hid in the upper atmosphere of Tosis, preying on ascetic colonists.
Subject devoted many cycles to advocating for the safeguarding of every Novian citizen regardless of their chosen lifestyle. Nevertheless, despite Subject's persistent lobbying, the Ascetics never garnered sufficient significance to warrant the allocation of resources necessary for their protection. The subject eventually recognized the futility of this approach and devised a more artful and devious strategy. Joining the Imperial Keepers, they progressed through the ranks to ultimately attain the position of Commander. Unaware of Subject's underlying motives, the emperor praised these accomplishments as an example of "Dreg Conversion."
After being assigned remote command of a small patrol cruiser, Subject used the vessel to assault and damage an imperial mining platform orbiting Tosis. This action interrupted the gas mining process during a politically delicate time which enraged the emperor. Subject was able to effectively attribute the incident to the pirates known to be hiding in the upper Tosian atmosphere. The subsequent response from the Imperium decisively eradicated the entire pirate presence in the region with brutal prejudice.
No archival documentation exists regarding the fate of subject Geiger 629 subsequent to the discovery of these actions which would have certainly been considered a betrayal. However, recent archaeological excavations conducted at the site of the ancient Orionis commune revealed remnants of a towering memorial effigy depicting the subject's likeness.
